Origins

Terrain

Geodesic dome structure, Ronald Resch (1971)

One of the questions we are frequently asked is why we chose the name ‘Terrain’ for our studio. Recently we were asked by The Design Society journal to contribute a brief write-up on the origins of our studio name for their latest issue (No. 4). Read More…

Launch

Welcome to our new website. This will serve as a temporary platform for our studio to archive the work and developments for the current year. At the moment we are busy with a number of challenging print and interactive projects for both local and international clients. The site will be updated irregularly with completed work and documentation as projects are completed.

For now, our current list of projects can be viewed in our Works section while our Filter allows users to browse our work by title, images, date and tags.

Above: A night of research, planning and mapping in our studio with Hideki Nakajima, Otl Aicher, Karl Gerstner, Max Schmid, Design Research Unit (D.R.U.), Pentagram, Atelier de Création Graphique and Pierre Bernard.

We just completed a new website design for Singapore based industrial design duo Studio Juju. The site is based on a customized Cargo template which was designed by Terrain and skillfully coded by the talented Jon Kyle. The main page makes use of a Paper.js animation which was developed based on forms created by Studio Juju.

Massimo Vignelli

‎”Pretty pictures can no longer lead the way in which our visual environment should be shaped. It is time to debate, to probe the values, to examine the theories that are part of our heritage and to verify their validity to express our times. It is time for the word to be heard.”

Restrictions

Armand Mevis

“Someone once said that design is always the product of a lot of restrictions, Charles Eames, I think, or maybe it was Charlie Chaplin — but it’s exactly how it is, you can’t overstate the role played by the restrictions.

But not only the ones that come with the job, I mean the given ones, content, the project, the time, your own limits, even the expectations of the client or whoever you are working with. They all restrict you. But I think that you then have to introuce a set of extra restrictions based on these, that in a way, protect you from them. I think it’s here that you in fact find find all the decisions you need. The size, the format, whether you choose color or only black and white, whether to use images and type or just type.
